Classical Pilates is the name given to the original set of exercises designed by Joseph Pilates. These exercises are designed to restore balance to the body by strengthening weak muscles and lengthening tight ones. They work specifically on the core and lumbar spine building both strength and mobility in the back. We also learn about shoulder stabilization which can help to improve posture. The muscles around the pelvis region are also developed in Pilates by strengthening the glutes and bringing mobility to the hips.
This is the purest form and considered by many to be the pinnacle of Pilates. It can take many years of practice to develop the strength and flexibility needed to perform the Classical repertoire in its entirety.
Over the years we have seen a more contemporary style emerge which incorporates modified versions of the original exercises. Each exercise is specifically designed to challenge the core and prepare the body for the Classical repertoire.
Many classes today are a combination of both styles. This allows beginners to develop their own body awareness and gain the strength and flexibility needed to perform the Classical exercises.
Here at Freemotion we place the emphasis on individual needs and work within your ability to develop an understanding of the principles of Pilates and develop a real connection with your core. Once this base is established you will truly being to reap the benefits of a regular Pilates practice.
Pilates Fundementals
It is an old but true analogy, but everyone is different. The way we move, our strength and flexibility is different from person to person. I take this as a given and that is why in my pilates class every movement I teach has a beginning and an end. By this I mean each exercise does have an alternative movement, from beginning to advance stages, so anyone can join in the class.
My pilates class takes a modern approach to classical pilates. I concentrate on the strengthening aspects of the hole body as well as the bodies optimum function. As a sports therapist and an osteopathy student I use the rehabilitation properties of pilates in my class and with my one to one clients. This approach to pilates is one that I strongly believe in and many people have already had a fantastic response to.
Therefore, I teach pilates in a way that your body will become aligned, so that you have that perfect balance of strength and flexibility.
This is my individual take on pilates, but on a final note: Joseph Pilates called his system “controloligy”, which I totally believe, by specific controlled movements intending to lengthen, tone and strengthen your body.
