Freemotion Yoga
The Ashtanga system is a set order of steps that a practitioner can work through in order to reach a state of Yoga meaning (union) within ones self.
The first or primary series, called Yoga Chikitsa, which means yoga therapy, realigns the spine, detoxifies the body, and builds strength, flexibility and stamina. The series of about 75 poses takes an hour and a half to two hours to complete, beginning with salutation to the sun A and B moving on to standing poses, seated poses, inversions and backbends before relaxation.
Is Ashtanga for You?
Ashtanga yoga is extremely popular. It is a vigorous, athletic style of practice. That being said it has a softer side, which is sometimes forgotten. This mixture of hard and soft, which makes it a very popular and rewarding style of yoga. It appeals to those who like a sense of order and who like to do things independently
Freemotion will start with led classes to help students gain an understanding of the practice moving on to self practice classes-(traditional method of practice where the teacher is on hand to offer adjustments) allowing the practitioner to develop further at their own pace. You're offered modified versions of the more challenging poses, verbal instruction on alignment and hands-on adjustments. You're encouraged to rest when necessary, skip vinyasas here and there. Gradually you do more and more.
Ashtanga is challenging and fun. It requires cultivation of the ability to recognize your limitations and not try to do everything during first few months. The practice should be Comfortable and evolve naturally building the strength and develop the flexibility over time. We do our weightlifting using our own body weight in the Poses. Ashtanga is a great complement to many other physical Activities. It will cultivate balance, reduce injuries and It will make everything else in your life seem easier.
